For most people in active addiction or alcoholism, life as most people know it pauses. Except the time that passes between hits or fixes, there is no other time. Addicts have long forgotten how to "deal" with the things life throws their way. Their coping skills vanish. Some simply stop caring... about themselves or anyone else.
When an alcoholic or drug addict forgets how to deal with life they usually stop trying. The result of this defeatist behavior is often a repetitive cycle of self-destructive actions that eventually takes the place of what used to be considered 'normal.' And over a period of time it becomes habit, or second nature to the addict or alcoholic.
After the physical addiction to alcohol or other drugs has been stopped through a sucessful detox, the process of recovery from this behavioral issue can begin. Our alcohol and drug treatment programs have a very simple (but not always easy) purpose: Helping the addict "re-learn" how to handle "life on life's terms" again... without the always available "backup"
of alcohol and drugs.
Right or wrong, society requires a few things from us in order to maintain membership. Some of these pre-requisites include jobs or school, paying rent, utility and grocery bills, establishing credit, having a car that is licensed and insured and paying our tickets when we get caught. Basically, society asks that we take responsibility for our actions while taking care of our needs. It's called "living life on life's terms" and it is also a very big part of the recovery process. Along with learning about and coming face to face with the biological and psychological aspects of addiction, and participating in the spiritual aspect if desired, living life on life's terms encompasses the issues that everyone in recovery from alcohol or drug addiction faces every day.
And it takes time. Recovery from the hell we brought upon ourselves through drug and alcohol abuse can't possibly happen overnight. For some of us it took many years just to be able to ask for help. And many of us just weren't ready to accept help when it was presented.
Through much trial and error, many successes and failures, it is said that that it can take many months of being surrounded by the recovery process to begin to undo the damage caused by years of self-abuse. And "many months" doesn't take into account PAWS, or Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome, quite possibly the leading reason a person that by all indications is living in and practicing recovery finds themselves at the other end of a bottle, a pipe or a syringe. Almost as if they were sleepwalking.
Although PAWS may sound complicated, it isn't. Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome is a group of symptoms that completely mimics the feelings, thoughts and emotions we experienced when we began detox or right before. In other words, our brain is telling us that it wants what used to make it feel better-completely skipping over the past 3, 6 or even 9 months of sobriety.
It is no surprise that it can take 60 days, 90 days or even 6 months in recovery from drug or alcohol addiction before a person becomes able again to live "life on life's terms". Its also why we personalize each program to the individual by providing the time they need to start living again, becoming safe, trustworthy accountable and productive.
